Who it’s for
Whether it’s your first 5K or your first ultra
We time road races, trail races, ultras, timed lap events, duathlons, walks, fun runs, and kids’ races. Here’s where to start.
First race?
Start with the race day guide. It covers what to bring, where to pin your bib, and what happens when you cross the finish line.
Chasing a time?
Find the pace you need for your goal, then learn how chip time and clock time differ so you know which number to watch.
How it works
How chip timing works
A small tag on your bib does the work. Here’s what happens between the start line and your result.
-
Your bib has a chip
A thin, disposable RFID tag is attached to the back of your bib. It’s linked to your bib number and your registration.
-
Mats read it
Antenna mats at the start and finish, and at any split or lap points, pick up your chip each time you cross them.
-
Software scores it
Timing software matches each read to your bib, then works out your times, pace, and places.
-
Results go up
At many races, results are printed and posted near the finish and shown live on RunSignup. Final results are posted on our Results page.
Watch your finish
Many of our results include a finish-line video link for each finisher. It opens our video on YouTube at about the moment you crossed the line. Your row can also link to your finisher certificate.
