From the official website:
Hello HAT runners, volunteers, and fans,
March 25th, 2023 will mark the 33rd running of this iconic spring ultra-marathon on the trails of Susquehanna State Park, in Havre de Grace, MD. The 50-kilometer course traverses single-track trails, intermixed with open fields, dirt roads, and as few steps as we can manage on black-top. Our course covers nearly every inch of the park over two identical loops with nearly 4,300 feet of climbing. Be ready for 4 stream crossings – (read: your feet will get wet!)
Registration will open November 25, 2022 on
The Steppingstone Farm Museum serves as our race day headquarters as well as the start/finish line. By day’s end, the historic grounds will be filled with spectators, volunteers, and, of course, your RD’s welcoming you to the finish with a handshake and the best swag there is to offer. Check out the runner’s corner for course maps and more details.
Along the way, you’ll experience our world-renowned aid stations filled with everything you need to keep you hydrated, energized and inspired. If you aren’t running, volunteers and spectators are always welcome!
One last thing… speaking of volunteers. This race doesn’t happen without the gracious donation of time from our many volunteers. When you come and experience HAT, you’ll walk away feeling it was something special – that’s not (only) the runner’s high, it’s because of our volunteers.
Check out our Runner’s page for all the fine print (fees, policies, course map, etc).
Registration opens Black Friday on ultrasignup.com
We’ll be ready for you on March 25th, 2023. Don’t miss this great ultra-run experience!

Welcome back to the Makin’ Hay 10K & 5K! We can’t wait to have you claim bragging rights after conquering one of these challenging but scenic courses on Saturday, April 22, 2023.
The scenic and rolling 10K course will take you on a journey through some of the prettiest farmland in Frederick County. Spring will be ushering forth in color as you run past numerous farms, along Catoctin Creek on a gravel road, and across two, historic one-lane, wooden deck bridges spanning Catoctin Creek. 5-year age group awards!!!
Race Day Schedule: 0700 – 0820 Bib Pickup; 0830-10K Start; 0835-5K Start; 1030-course closes for both events.
Bib pickup closes at 8:20 sharp for both events, with vehicular access to the park closing at that time as well. No late starts – plan your arrival time accordingly. Running strollers are allowed.
Our 5K option offers half the distance and half of the elevation change of our 10K, is all on paved surfaces, crosses one wooden deck bridge twice, and also provides some amazingly sweeping vistas!
Register before 3/20/2023 to guarantee your shirt size. We are working on a new design for the 2023 shirts. Finishers of the in-person event will receive a commemorative glass, and with 5-year age-group awards, there will be plenty of goodies to take home!
There is NO virtual option for 2023.
With a return to in-person running events, be assured that we will, at a minimum, be following current local, state, and CDC guidance dicta regarding coronavirus mitigation procedures.
Refund Policy: You will be given the opportunity to purchase event insurance during registration from a third-party provider. Registrants will be able to initiate a partial refund via their RunSignup profile up until 30 days prior to the event. After that, no individual refunds or transfers.
