Predictions use Riegel’s formula and assume similar training, terrain, and weather.
They’re most reliable between nearby distances, like 5K to 10K. For the marathon
and 50K, treat them as a best case unless you’ve trained for that distance.

Tips

## Using pace on race day

### Line up by pace

Knowing your pace helps you pick a starting spot, so you’re not weaving around slower
runners or getting swept out too fast.

### Start steady

Most runners do best with an even effort. Going out much faster than your goal pace
usually costs more time late in the race than it saves early.

### Predictions are estimates

The race time predictor assumes similar training, terrain, and weather. It’s most
reliable between nearby distances, like 5K to 10K.

Questions

## About pace and predictions

### 󠀁[What’s the difference between pace and speed?](https://overlandtiming.com/runners/pace-calculator/#f7b9606d5d90ff0cf)󠁿

Pace is time per distance, like 8:30 per mile. Speed is distance per time, like
7.1 miles per hour. Runners usually talk in pace, while treadmills often show speed.

### 󠀁[How does the race time predictor work?](https://overlandtiming.com/runners/pace-calculator/#e2c350a74a07d348b)󠁿

It uses a formula published by Peter Riegel: T2 = T1 × (D2 ÷ D1)^(1.06). The 1.06
exponent reflects how most runners slow down a little as the distance gets longer.

Treat the result as a ballpark. Training, terrain, hills, and heat all matter, and
predictions get less reliable the further apart the two distances are.

### 󠀁[Why doesn’t my watch’s pace match my official pace?](https://overlandtiming.com/runners/pace-calculator/#28fbec7953ced231f)󠁿

The pace in our results is based on your official time and the race distance. Your
watch divides by its own GPS distance, which usually reads a little long, so its
pace often looks a bit faster.

### 󠀁[Can I use kilometers?](https://overlandtiming.com/runners/pace-calculator/#28d91e772f71e4093)󠁿

Yes. Choose kilometers for distance and per km for pace. The results always show
both units, so you can compare.
